QUALITY OF LIFE FIRST

Recovery focused, person led

Recovery is personal. We support people to identify what moving forward means to them: perhaps rebuilding confidence, feeling more in control, reconnecting with relationships or pursuing an aspiration.

Support is shaped around the person’s own goals and pace, alongside the mental health professionals involved in their care where appropriate. We do not define success simply as fewer symptoms or less support; a meaningful and fulfilling life is central.

The person comes before the diagnosis

We recognise the individual behind a mental health need: their history, identity, strengths and hopes for the future. Support plans are developed with the person and reviewed as their circumstances and priorities change.

Working with chosen supporters and involved professionals, we aim to help people build confidence and routines that support the life they want.

Positive Behaviour Support (PBS)

When someone is distressed or showing behaviours of concern, we look beyond the immediate situation. We consider what they are communicating, what has happened, and whether their support or surroundings need to change.

PBS brings together person-centred understanding, proactive support and ongoing learning. Where individual behaviour support plans are needed, these are developed with the person, their chosen supporters and appropriate professional input. We focus on improving quality of life and reducing the need for restrictive practices, not on compliance for its own sake.

Capable Environments

A Capable Environment supports safety, autonomy and connection, while allowing for changing needs and preferences.

Communication that works

Listening carefully, noticing how someone communicates and making information and choices understandable.

Support that responds

Adapting the pace, level of assistance, routines and sensory environment to the person.

Positive relationships

Offering consistent, respectful support and time with people the person chooses.

Opportunities to take part

Making ordinary activities, social connection and personally meaningful goals accessible.

We ask what could change around a person to make life easier, more engaging and less restrictive.

Person-Centred Active Support (PCAS)

We draw on Person-Centred Active Support to make everyday participation achievable. Together, we identify practical activities that matter and offer enough assistance to get involved without taking over.

Preparing food, rebuilding a routine, attending an appointment or reconnecting with a hobby can all be useful starting points. The pace and level of help are agreed with the person, taking account of energy, confidence and changing needs.

Trauma Responsive support

Past experiences can affect how safe someone feels, how they build trust and how they respond to everyday situations. Our approach is to listen without judgement, explain what is happening, offer choices and work consistently and respectfully.

We avoid assuming that we know someone’s story or requiring them to share it. Support is sensitive to individual boundaries, preferences and signs of distress, with specialist help sought when needed.

PERMA: making room for a fulfilling life

We use PERMA as a way of thinking together about wellbeing: Positive Emotion, Engagement, Relationships, Meaning and Accomplishment. It helps us look beyond tasks and ask what makes life worthwhile for each person.

Positive Emotion

Making space for enjoyment, comfort and the things that bring pleasure, without expecting someone to feel positive all the time.

Engagement

Taking part in activities that hold someone’s interest, with the right support to be involved.

Relationships

Developing connections with people who matter, with respect for choice, trust and belonging.

Meaning

Having a sense of purpose, identity and contribution that reflects what the person values.

Accomplishment

Recognising progress towards personally chosen goals, including everyday achievements.

This is a starting point for conversations and support planning, not a test people must pass or a replacement for specialist assessment.

Connection and next steps

We support meaningful roles, relationships and participation in the wider community. A next step may be returning to an interest, building a new routine or exploring learning and work.

Where appropriate, we work with the person, commissioners, housing providers and other professionals on step-down and move-on plans. The pace and pathway reflect the person’s goals and support needs.
